A glass greenhouse heats up fast. That's the whole point in January — and the whole problem in July. Get ventilation right and your greenhouse holds a workable temperature on its own most of the year. Get it wrong and you'll cook the tender plants you built the thing to protect.
Here's how greenhouse ventilation actually works, and the exact setup we recommend.

How does greenhouse ventilation work?
Good greenhouse ventilation is really about moving hot air out and cool air in, using the fact that heat rises. Roof vents at the ridge release the hottest air as it climbs. A louvered side-wall window pulls cool air in down low. Add an exhaust fan to force the exchange on the hottest days, and you have a system that regulates itself.
Think of it as a loop. Sun heats the interior, the warmest air rises to the peak and escapes through the roof vents, and that outflow draws fresh, cooler air in through the louvered window near the ground. The bigger the temperature difference, the harder that loop pulls. On a mild day it's plenty. On a 95-degree afternoon, it needs help — that's where the fan comes in.
One layout rule from the design of these greenhouses: the roof vent and the louvered window can't sit side by side. They're meant to work at different heights — vent high, intake low — so the air actually travels across the space instead of short-circuiting.
What is the best exhaust fan setup for a greenhouse?
The best exhaust fan setup puts the fan in the gable end, opposite the louvered window, so incoming and outgoing air cross the full length of the greenhouse. For the strongest pull, close the roof vents when the fan runs — that forces all the intake air through the louvered window and across your plants instead of leaking straight out the top.
That opposite-corner placement is the whole trick. Fan on one gable, louvered intake on the far wall: the air is dragged diagonally through the entire growing space, not just the few feet near the fan. It's the difference between a breeze and a dead spot.
Most exhaust fans run off an external thermostat, so the fan kicks on only when the interior crosses your set temperature. Hands-off, and it protects plants while you're at work or away.
Here's the part that saves people money and frustration: tempered glass cannot be cut. So you can't just carve a fan opening into a glass panel — it would shatter. Instead, swap one glass pane for a Lexan (polycarbonate) panel, which can be cut on site to fit the fan housing exactly. It's a clean, reversible way to mount an exhaust fan without touching the glass. Planning a fan is one of the best reasons to consider a polycarbonate or hybrid roof from the start.
Do you need automatic vent openers?
You don't need them, but most of our buyers are glad they added them. Automatic openers — the Sesam Liberty type — sense heat and open the vents on their own, no daily trips to the greenhouse required. On the roof vents especially, that's the difference between a greenhouse that self-regulates and one you have to babysit twice a day.
Manual spindle openers are the alternative: cheaper, reliable, and completely fine if you're the type who's out there every morning anyway. Many Royal Victorian models ship with a mix — a couple of automatic vents and one or two spindle-operated ones — so you get hands-off regulation plus manual control when you want it.
A quick maintenance note that keeps them working for years: the automatic piston openers appreciate a light oil on the rod and threading two or three times a year. WD-40 or even olive oil does the job. Two minutes, twice a season.
What about fly screens and keeping bugs out?
Open vents let air in — and, if you're not careful, everything else. Fly screens are available for roof vents, the louvered window, push-out windows, and doors, so you can ventilate hard without inviting pests onto your plants.
One compatibility note: the door screen slides on the inside, which means it doesn't play nicely with hinged-door auto-closers or with units placed against a wall. The ventilation setup we recommend
Put simply, here's the house recommendation for a Janssens greenhouse:
- Roof vents at the ridge to release rising hot air — automatic openers if you want it hands-off.
- A louvered window low on the opposite side as your cool-air intake.
- An exhaust fan in the gable, opposite the louvered window, mounted in a cut Lexan panel — never a cut glass one.
- An external thermostat so the fan runs only when it's needed.
- Close the roof vents when the fan runs to force the strongest cross breeze.
- Fly screens wherever you'll have openings, chosen to match your door setup.
Do that and your greenhouse manages summer heat on its own most days, with the fan stepping in only on the worst afternoons.
